  1. Can someone please help me learn GIMP? I have had it downloaded on my computer for several years now, and I have been reading “Beginning GIMP From Novice to Professional”, on Chapter 11. I am trying to create a collage of some pets of mine, past and present, to practice the techniques, but I could really use more guidance in this, as no one seems to be very knowledgable about this SW.

Please reply if you can help me bring me up to speed on GIMP.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Lisa Maloney

    1. Hello Lisa,

Well you could go ask to the official gimp-users mailing list (you can subscribe here: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list), but you will need to have specific questions. It is very hard otherwise to answer to someone on the other side of the earth with vague sentence as “create a collage of some pets of mine”. You should therefore try to do what you want, and when a specific issue comes around, ask them with forth details on the mailing list (like “how to cut accurately around my pet on a photograph”, or “how to blend 2 images to look like they are one”, or whatever else. Otherwise none can guess what is the exact problem you are having in your collage).

Other than this, you’ll find a lot of video tutorials on the web (in particular on Youtube) for various techniques. You can also find many text tutorials. And recently one of the GIMP specialists started a website about photography manipulation with Open Source. It is still quite new so there aren’t a lot of articles yet, and that’s not GIMP-only, but you could still keep an eye on it: https://pixls.us/
      Well that’s it, I guess. 🙂
      Have fun learning!

  2. Do you know how to save an image as RGB format from JPEG, or other format? I am unable to upload the other formats to my da Portfolio.

    Please let me know.

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Lisa,

      > Do you know how to save an image as RGB format from JPEG, or other format? I am unable to upload the other formats to my da Portfolio.

You must “export” the image, and not “save” it. This will allow you to have access to all standard image formats (JPEG, PNG…). Saving is reserved for your work in progress in GIMP own format (.xcf, which is therefore to be considered rather as a project format).
